Speaker Block #3

DENNIS MORTENSEN

CEO/Founder, x.ai

Dennis is the CEO and Founder of x.ai. He’s a pioneer and expert in leveraging Data and a serial entrepreneur who has successfully delivered a number of company exits on that theme. Dennis’s long term vision of killing the inbox triggered the formation of x.ai and the creation of an artificial intelligence personal assistant to schedule meetings. He’s an accredited Associate Analytics Instructor at the University of British Columbia, the Author of Data Driven Insights from Wiley and a frequent speaker on the subject of AI, intelligent agents, and the future of work. A native of Denmark, Mortensen currently calls New York City his home.

In this talk, x.ai CEO and Founder, Dennis Mortensen, will discuss some of the important factors and decisions that need to be made in building an AI autonomous agent. As x.ai developed its AI assistants—Amy & Andrew—who take over meeting scheduling entirely, they encountered quite a few unexpected challenges.

This talk will cover the key questions and challenges to consider if you’re involved in designing artificially intelligent agents, based on those faced by x.ai in building their AI assistants (more details below).

DESCRIPTION:
Join us for what's sure to be an awesome night in AI! This month's event will focus on NLP. We'll hear from Dr. Catherine Havasi (CEO/Co-Founder, Luminoso) who will talk about "CONCEPTNET: Teaching Machines Common Sense".

Wine + Beer + AI + Networking = The Best Tuesday ever!

ABSTRACT:

Computer systems can understand the language that people use better if they share the background knowledge, the “common sense,” that people use when they communicate. Machine learning can be more effective and require less training data if it starts from this background of “common sense,” understanding what people are talking about in general when they use language, before learning from its input data.

We discuss the long-running open-data project ConceptNet, a multilingual knowledge graph that connects words and phrases of natural language with labeled relationships, providing background knowledge and common sense about what words mean in many languages. We then discuss how to use ConceptNet in modern machine learning and show how ConceptNet is used in a commercial setting at the enterprise feedback management company Luminoso.

NYAI #16

Join us for what's sure to be an exciting night in AI! We have an exciting guest for this month's event! We'll hear from Arthur Tisi (CEO and Founder of The Praescripto Group, LLC. and its subsidiary companies MeaningBot Inc. and Connectidy Inc) who will talk about "Understanding Humans With Machines". This will be followed by a brief panel discussion, and open Q&A.

Wine + Beer + AI + Networking = The Best Tuesday ever!

ABSTRACT

Deep neural networks dominate advanced approaches to pattern recognition. Today neural networks transcribe our speech, recognize our pets, understand linguistics and fight our trolls. Recent advances by Geoff Hinton and the introduction of capsule networks only ups the ante. But despite the results, we have to wonder… why do they work so well?

In this session, Arthur Tisi, CEO and Founder of MeaningBot, will share some extremely remarkable results in applying deep neural networks to natural language processing (NLP), particularly in the areas of determining human traits in the areas of leadership, team building, personality, consumption preferences and more.  Arthur will cite real world examples and share some of the math and science behind these advances including different variants of artificial neural networks, such as deep multilayer perceptron (MLP), convolutional neural network (CNN), recursive neural network (RNN), recurrent neural network (RNN), long short-term memory (LSTM), sequence-to-sequence model, and shallow neural networks including word2vec for word embeddings.

ABSTRACT

Can machines discover scientific laws automatically? Despite the prevalence of big data, the process of distilling data into scientific laws has resisted automation. Particularly challenging are situations with small amounts of data that is difficult or expensive to collect. This talk will outline a series of recent research projects, starting with self-reflecting robotic systems, and ending with machines that can formulate hypotheses, design experiments, and interpret the results, to discover new scientific laws. We will see examples from psychology to cosmology, from classical physics to modern physics, from big science to small science.
